News for The First Avenger: Captain America continues to roll out.
The Invaders will be seen in the movie fighting alongside with Captain America. This in itself isn't new news. Last summer, Kevin Feige told CHUD.com that the Invaders would most likely appear in the movie. The update is the WWII superteam will have a bigger presence. At that same press conference for The Wolfman (where it seems director Joe Johnston spent more time talking about Captain America instead of the Wolfman), Johnston told CHUD that "They'll be in the entire second half."
Johnston also stated that the team will have six members on it. It's not clear if that includes Cap and Bucky. It's also not clear what members will be seen. The original team consisted of Cap and Bucky along with Namor, the Human Torch, Toro, Union Jack, Spitfire, Miss America and Whizzer, among others. I would have to say I have some doubts over Namor appearing since the last report was Universal still had the rights to using Namor in a film. This news could mean that instead of a solo Cap movie, we could be seeing a full fledge superhero team movie.
What about Cap's costume? Why would the US Army put their super soldier in a costume to begin with? The LA Times reported that Steve Rogers is "forced into the USO circuit." Despite being an unstoppable force, they don't want to risk him being injured or killed. He's the only one with the super soldier serum inside him. They decide to give him a flag suit which Cap isn't too thrilled about.
"So he's up on stage doing songs and dances with chorus girls and he can't wait to get out and really fight. When he does go AWOL, he covers up the suit but then, after a few things happen, he realizes that this uniform allows him to lead. By then, he's become a star in the public mind and a symbol. The guys get behind him because he embodies something special."
Johnston also said there will be more than one costume. The image to the left has made its way online recently (and pointed out again by user Precise ). It was designed by toymaker/statue designer Kotobukiya. Speculation is this could be what Cap will look like. Johnston pointed out that Cap will modify his "flag costume" and adds armor to it. This is the way he figures they can justify Cap wearing an actual costume.
We'll have to sit tight until March 1st, when the casting is supposed to be complete. Hopefully then we'll find out who will be playing Cap and what other actors will appear as the Invaders (along with what members of the team).
